Phonology
1.Defenition about phonology
Phonology is the
study of speech sound or Phonology can be described
as an aspect of language that deals with rulesfor the structure and sequencing
of speech sounds. Every language has a wide variety of speech sounds (phonemes).
2.defference between an phonology and phonetics
1.Phonology
The study of speech sounds of a
given language and their function within the sound system of that language
2.Phonetics
The
study of speech processes, including the anatomy, neurology, and pathology of
speech, the articulation,
Spesification,classification
of speech sound

3. The IPA
Phonologists and phoneticians generally have to use special symbols – usually the IPA, orInternational Phonetic Alphabet
1.consonants
Here are some other symbols for consonants with examples of the
sounds (italicised) from English words. The alternative symbols have been
included for information and will not be used in this module.

2.vowels
Here are some vowel symbols. Vowels are different from consonants
(here I am talking about sounds, not spelling) in that there is
relatively little obstruction to the air passage. The kind of vowel sound that
you produce will therefore depend on how you adjust some of the movable organs
that affect the sound produced – especially your tongue position and whether you round (pucker) or spread your lips.
If you took an x-ray picture of your oral cavity whilst saying
particular vowel sounds, you will notice that the tongue can be raised more or
less (be in a close/high or open/low position), and whether the raising is towards the front (towards the lips) or
the back (towards the throat).

4.phonology processes
Phonological
processes are patterns of speech found in many typically
developing children. For example, weak syllable deletion is when a child
deletes syllables
from a multisyllabic word. A child may say, nana rather than saying, banana, a
child may
also delete final consonants from words, cu for cup. Phonological processes
become problematic
when they do not disappear by a certain age. There developmental data that indicates when
phonological processes typically disappear. There are different norms for different processes

Hi, can you show it who the experts of phonology? Thanks a lot
BalasHapusoke tia
Hapusi think so many experts about phonology, one of them is Joseph Stemberger
(University of British Columbia)
Where is example about phonology?
BalasHapusSorry,I'm forget to send example about my topics in blog, but ,yesterday in the class, saya sudah memberikan Contoh nya,
HapusExample about phonology is,misalnya pengucapan pada anak bayi yg belum pandai bicara, setiap suara yang dia keluarkan tentunya memiliki makna.
Thank you..
Mifta, can you give us an example work or creation of phonology from an expert about it?
BalasHapusWhat different pronunciation between phonology?
BalasHapusWhy we learn phonology if have done pronunciation?
Phonology is a linguistics term. It is the study of the sounds and relationships between sounds that exists in a language. Different languages have different phonologies, and linguists have generally come to consensus on what they are.
HapusPronunciation is the way in which these sounds are spoken. I can pronounce a word carefully, slowly, quickly, etc. I can use the wrong sounds and pronounce something badly. Pronunciation is phonology in action.
Phonology is what the sounds are in a language.
Pronunciation is how we say them.
What's the difference between a vowel and a consonant?
BalasHapusdifferent between vowels and consonant:
HapusWhat are Vowels
As explained above, vowels are pronounced with an open vocal tract. Therefore, the tongue does not touch the teeth, lips or the roof of the mouth when pronouncing vowel. It is important to notice that the term vowel can refer to both vowel sounds and vowel letters in the alphabet.
There are five vowels in the alphabets: a, e, i, o, and u. Sometimes the letter y is also considered as a vowel. (ex: cry, fly) There are about twenty vowel sounds in English language, and these five vowel letters represent all these sounds. This means that a single vowel letter can represent many vowel sounds. For example, consider the words cat (/kat/), heart(/hɑːt/), hate (/heɪt/), all(/ɔːl/), and said/sɛd/. All these words contain the vowel a, but the sound of the vowel is different in each word. In the same manner, the same vowel sound can be also represented by different vowel letters as well. For example, note how the sound /eɪ/ is represented by different words in the words weigh (/weɪ/), clay (/kleɪ/), bake (/beɪk), and opaque (/ə(ʊ)ˈpeɪk/).Difference Between Vowels and Consonants
What are Consonants
A consonant is a basic speech sound that is articulated with complete or partial closure of the vocal tract. Since the vocal tract is not completely open, the sound is stopped by teeth, tongue, lips, or constriction of the vocal cords at a certain point.
The term consonant also refers to both letters and sounds. All the letters in the alphabet, apart from the 5 vowels, are consonants. Thus, there are 21 consonant letters in the alphabet, and they represent about 24 consonant sounds.
Consonants can be grouped into two major categories: voiced and unvoiced consonants. Voiced consonants make use of the vibrations of the vocal folds in the larynx whereas unvoiced consonants don’t. It is easy to identify voiced and unvoiced consonants by putting your finger on the throat and feeling the vibrations.
Give me more example about phonology??
BalasHapusSiti....Yesterday,I'm explain example about my topics in the class, but I'm forget send example about my topics in my blog...sorry
HapusAny other example of process phonology ?
BalasHapus
HapusPhonological processes are patterns of sound errors that typically developing children use to simplify speech as they are learning to talk. They do this because they don’t have the ability to coordinate the lips, tongue, teeth, palate and jaw for clear speech. As a result they simplify complex words in predictable ways until they develop the coordination required to articulate clearly. For example, they may reduce consonant clusters to a single consonant like, “pane” for “plane” or delete the weak syllable in a word saying, “nana” for “banana.” There are many different patterns of simplifications or phonological processes.
What benefits can we get from learn phonology?
BalasHapusWith phonology you're looking at the basic speech sounds of a language and it is important for a language teacher to have a good knowledge of these as they are the building blocks of language.
HapusA good teacher will not only need to have a thorough knowledge of the phonology of their L1 language but also of their students mother tongue. This knowledge is invaluable as it will let you know what kinds of problems your students will have when attempting to produce new language. Predicting these problems before you present new language will influence how you present that language.
Furthermore, spending classroom time working on specific problems your students have with the English phonotic system will make their speech clearer, which in turn will make them more easily understood and therefore more effective communicators, which in turn will make them more confident and proud of their Language production - always a good thing!!
The English language is not written phonetically and this causes many pronounciation problems for students when they encounter new language in its written form - how to pronounce it?! Dictionaries are brilliant books and a good one will always give the pronounciation of the word in the phonetic script. Teaching the phonetic script to students thus gives them access to the pronounciation of a word without the need to hear a model example from a native speaker - great learner autonomy!
So a basic knowledge of phonology for both teachers and learners is an essential part of language teaching and learning.
This can be done as an intricated feature of general language imput and presentation or as stand alone lessons. With plenty of materials available for the teaching of phonics this is an aspect of language which is both fun and rewarding to teach and your learners will benefit greatly with improved language skills.

What is the goal we learn the fonology?
BalasHapusaccording to me,if you learn phonology you can understand how about sound, every sound has meaning,
Hapussederhananya jika kamu melihat anak kecil yang baru belajar bicara, misalnya adek kamu, kamu akan mengerti setiap bunyi yang dia ucapkan tentumya mempunyai makna
Hai miftah, an example different about phonology and pronounciation??
BalasHapusWhy? Because You just explain different phonology and phonetics.
Thanks miftah
wizy
Hapusi think example about phonology is ,misalnya pada anak kecil pengucapan "pane"=seharusnya "plane"
kalau,example about pronounciatin:example=ɪɡˈzɑːmp(ə)l/
because,Phonology is what the sounds are in a language.
Pronunciation is how we say them.
